SEO for Local Businesses

For any local business, developing an online presence may be challenging, but it’s worth it.  Web marketing is the new way to reach new customers. There are millions of websites and businesses on the Internet competing for business. From a local standpoint, search engine optimization (SEO) is crucial.

SEO is a process of improving your website’s visibility in search engines, social networking sites and more. Through on page and off page SEO techniques, you can increase the amount of organic traffic to your website. Ranking in search engines for your local geographical areas is also important.

To appear in search results for different areas, specific targeting and local SEO needs to be implemented into your efforts; if you don’t intentionally target a county or specific town in your website copy or through other off-page SEO techniques, your business or website will not be found through search engines.

If your business ranks in your town and only your town, it’s most likely that you aren’t using any local SEO and neighboring towns won’t be able to find your business. You probably rank in your town because of minor mentions on your website. For example, Premiere Creative is located in Millburn, NJ and the address is written on the website in numerous places. If a customer was searching for, strategic marketing firm in Millburn NJ, the website would appear; the website would be far less likely to appear if someone were to search for SEO firm in NJ.

To appear for surrounding areas and counties, SEO must be implemented. Focusing on specific towns and counties requires on-page and off-page local SEO targeting. Google does build associations between towns and counties, but without any mentions or targeting for your business, they won’t make the connection.

It’s important for local businesses to use SEO. Although your local business website may appear in searches for towns that you conduct business in, it’s most likely due to the fact of an address mentioned on the website. Content is also important and keywords should be rich and business focused, strategically placed throughout webpages.

Local SEO is important

Local SEO is important

Local search engine optimization (SEO) is a powerful marketing initiative to make. It’s the perfect blend of driving more traffic to your online website as well as to your local retail location. Alerting potential customers who live in your retail location’s general area to the existence of your business is going to undoubtedly increase sales. After all, people tend to trust local businesses more than obscure, online outlets. The beauty of the matter is that there are some relatively easy ways to do local SEO for anyone who is so inclined.

My first suggestion to you for your local SEO efforts would be to pay close attention to the keywords you use in the anchor text. Google does. Anchor text is the text that’s used to embed the link you are using. So, if you’ve written an article to post online and you’re going to link back to your website, instead of saying, “click here” and embedding the link into the word, “here”, instead use the keywords you want to rank for along with the local area your business is in. For instance, if you wanted to rank for the term, “Dentists” and you were located in Chicago, you might want to embed the link into the phrase, “Dentists Chicago”. That helps the search engines to connect the dots and realize that your link is relevant to those keywords and that geographical area.

Another great way for you to get your business to pull up on local searches is to submit your information to Google Maps. Google Maps is a very useful and popular tool that millions of people use every day. It can be used to get directions for various local businesses by consumers. By submitting your company address and information to Google Maps, you’ve just made yourself available to those who are looking for directions to local businesses in your community. Oh, and did I mention it’s free to do this? Yeah, it’s free.

Lastly, you ought to participate in local blogs and forums. Any sort of website that is already established for your local community will also already have local customers visiting there on a regular basis. Get in on the conversations. Contribute useful and relevant information and opinions for the conversations at hand. Be sure to embed your company website in your signature. The more people who see you participating actively on these local blogs and forums, the more their interest will be peaked. People will inevitably click on your link in the signature and will therefore learn about your business that’s located right in their local community. Local SEO really can be an effective marketing strategy that’s easy to do.

Optimizing Linked In for SEO

3

Currently there are many social networking sites that exist on every topic, no matter what you are interested in there is a social network for you! And many of these social networks have a potential benefit to offer from an SEO perspective. One of the bigger genres of social networking, and perhaps one of the more important uses for social networking is that of professional social networking and the unarguable champion of professional networking, the leader of the band, the granddaddy of them all is Linked In!
Linked In is a professional networking site that was developed to allow users to network with recruiters and industry leaders. Once you create an account, you can invite everyone from your email address book to join and start networking with colleagues. This platform allows you to create a profile, which is basically an online resume where you list your accomplishments, education, employment history etc… In terms of optimizing your profile for SEO there is one important thing that you should do, there is a place within the profile where you can add a link to your website, blog… these links will be a part of your public Linked In profile, and they can help your overall SEO.
There are two other very useful features that Linked In offers that can help generate buzz for you and your site, the first of these is “Linked In Answers”. Linked In Answers allows you to ask questions, once asked; a question can be posted on the answers page and can also be sent to up to 200 of your connections. This is a very useful feature if you are looking to attract visitors from your industry.
Another very useful component of Linked In is Groups. Groups within Linked In function much the same way as groups in other social networking sites, you can reply to or post a discussion, invite people to join the group, invite group members to join your network etc… The cool thing about groups is that in Linked In there are many professional groups on every topic imaginable and if you want to be considered an expert in your chosen field, groups are a good place to start.
How do you use Linked In? Is there a feature of the site that you like that I’ve overlooked? Please share with us by leaving a comment.

Twitter still important?

The value that Twitter can potentially bring to your brand/business/website is a topic that can be debated, but simply put, it all depends on the amount of time that you dedicate to the Twitter platform, and the interest that you are able to generate from your followers. The fact remains that having an inactive Twitter account will accomplish nothing, whereas an active Twitter account, one where you have thousands of followers, with whom you communicate regularly can do wonders to generate buzz for your site and can be a great method by which to network, and make valuable business contacts and friends.
The most important thing about Twitter from an SEO perspective is the proper optimization of your account; this means, a profile image (a real picture of you), a website (either your site, your blog, or a link to another web 2.0 page you have set up), and a description, Twitter descriptions are limited to 160 characters, people often try to be cute in their descriptions without saying anything, but if you want a popular Twitter account it is valuable to tell people who you are.
Twitter has a number of useful features that you can use to promote your site, blog… one of my favorites is Twitter feed (this is an independent company that helps users attach an RSS feed to their Twitter account). The way this service works is you set up an account, then add an RSS feed (usually from your blog) and then, every time that you update your blog (your RSS feed is updated) Twitter feed sends out a Tweet to your followers with your blog title and a link to the blog post. If you have dedicated followers, and write interesting blogs this can potentially generate tons of good traffic.
What has Twitter done for you? Please share by leaving a comment.

Is Facebook still important?

4

Today Facebook remains the grand daddy of all social networking sites, if you want to connect with long lost elementary school friends, or spy on a high school girlfriend, or simply see your friends latest pics from that weekend trip they took… then Facebook is for you! But, if you are looking to use Facebook for business, to market your product, or to improve your SEO then the answer becomes much less obvious.
As a rule Facebook discourages their users from using their services to market a product, and if you are caught ignoring this they will shut down your account without warning, I would therefore not advise a client to try to gain the Facebook filters b/c you are likely to have your account disabled. Although, if you have a wide circle of friends, or an existing Facebook account on which you are already active… I would advise you to certainly take advantage of this platform! I would also advise you to use Facebook if you have a social business, (la restaurant, bar, club…); in this case Facebook would make it easy for you to maintain a large circle of friends, and to communicate with those friends about events, contests, discounts…
An additional feature of Facebook and the only feature of Facebook that currently has any bearing on the SEO of your website is the Fan page. A fan page is a page that you can set up about your business, favorite singer… and then invite “fans” to that page. This page allows you to list a website, and it is typically indexed by major search engines.

Facts about trading links

1

Today link building remains one of the most important aspects of off site SEO, and is perhaps the primary method by which to get a site to rank in search engines for chosen keywords. There are multiple aspects to a proper link building strategy (social bookmarking, organic links, blogging, web 2.0…) but what I want to discuss here is trading links.
I know that I have spoken on this topic on a few previous occasions, but the question of link trading (otherwise known as exchanging links) is one that arises often in my day to day work for my clients. I recently had an impromptu debate on this topic with a marketing expert who I met through one of the forums in which I am active. I expressed a desire to this person to trade links between my clients and hers, and she responded to me that she never traded links b/c she did not see any purpose in doing this. This post is therefore written in response to that debate (and if the person with whom I had this discussion is reading this post I urge you to leave your response as a comment)
Trading links is perhaps the oldest type of link building and dates back to the early days of the internet, and is also the most straight forward method of getting links (although not the easiest by far). In trading links you essentially make a deal with another webmaster in which they link to you and you, in turn link to them, under such a deal both sites benefit. Although this type of link building has lost much weight in recent years, as Google and other search engines have refined their algorithms – to the point where Google can now detect when a simple link exchange has taken place (I link to your homepage on my homepage, and you return link to my homepage on your homepage) link trading still counts in the eyes of Google. Additionally trading links has a secondary benefit b/c not only does it help you with improving your keyword rankings, but it also helps improve your referral traffic b/c (for example) if you are an author of a kids adventure book about summer camp and you get a summer camp in New Jersey to link to your book, it is very likely that many of the visitors to the website of the summer camp will visit your site to see what your book is about, and it is also likely that your sites’ visitors may be interested in a summer camp in New Jersey.
In addition to a two way link exchange (which isn’t as powerful for search engines as it once was) you can also do a 3-way link exchange, or a 4-way link exchange… Under this method, instead of linking 2 sites directly to each other, you link 3 sites to each other, where site “A” gets a link on site “B”, site “B” gets a link on site “C” and site “C” gets a link on site “A”, or, using the above example, you simply add a third site into the loop, so the New Jersey Summer camp would add a link to the summer camp adventure book, the site of the summer camp adventure book would add a link to a Summer camp stories blog, and the blog would in turn add a link to the NJ summer camp. (This is more complicated, but it also more beneficial and it is worth it)
Another important thing to consider when trading links (and another thing that was discussed in my debate with the marketing expert) is the page rank of the site with which you are exchanging the links. The answer to this is relatively simple, the higher the page rank of the page where your link appears, the better the quality of the link (as seen by Google), although if you are trying to increase your referral traffic the page rank question should not be of concern.
There is one more potential factor to look at when trading links; this is relevance of the links. It is always beneficial to trade links with websites that are similar to yours, regardless of the page rank – this will help to make you an expert in your field (at least in the eyes of Google).
To sum up, and to put an end (however temporary to the link trading question), yes, it is always a good idea to trade links. If you have any thoughts on this topic please leave a comment, I approve all legitimate comments.

Questions about nofollow

Today, quality backlinks are still the most important thing when it comes to getting your site to rank for your top (competitive) keywords (discussed in previous blog post, Link building 101). Links can come in many forms, but one of the key distinctions is between “Do follow links” and “No follow links”; a no follow link means that that link is not given weight (or is given much less weight) by search engines. No follow links were invented a few years ago in an attempt to try to cut down on spam links. Better understanding no follow links can help you better hone your link building strategy and can help you get the biggest bang for your buck.
This video discusses some features of Do follow/No follow links as they pertain to proper SEO. This video features Matt Cutts, who is one of the senior developers at Google.

Getting to know you, getting to know all about you

For those of you who are familiar with the song that the title of this post originates from, I want to state upfront that this blog post will have nothing to do with this song; I just heard this song and thought that it would make a catchy title for what I want to say…
One of the important things about having a successful website, (aside from on page SEO, link building, social media/social bookmarking…) is your [website owner] familiarity with your audience, as the saying goes, “do what you know”. To have a truly successful site you must intuitively be able to figure out what kind of visitors you will get and what they will be looking for. Furthermore, you need to anticipate/address questions that they might have, and respond to any unanticipated questions promptly. Lastly, you should be familiar with your business and with your competition and you should learn from their mistakes, instead of making your own. In today’s world it is doubtful that any particular website is unique, even if you are selling blue widgets with orange trim, I would wager that there are a dozen sites selling the exact same product, and each does it a little differently, one chooses to concentrate on blogging, another is active on Twitter, yet another has 10s of thousands of low quality backlinks etc… Anyway, you, as the newcomer into the world of blue widgets with orange trim have an advantage because you should be able to learn valuable lessons from many of your competitors, and armed with these lessons you should be able to avoid many novice mistakes. Therefore, my advice to you is, to apply the title of this blog not only to yourself, but to your competition as well, and to use some of the SEO tools that I‘ve mentioned in this blog to learn the strengths and weaknesses of your competition and to thrive!

Going local: SEO through the eyes of the local market

0

Local SEO is something that I have mentioned a number of times on this blog and is something that I will continue to occasionally mention in posts b/c I am a big believer in it!
There are a few important things to note about local SEO, the first being that it is usually free. Another thing about this form of SEO is that it helps you to reach your target audience more efficiently, consider the target audience of a modern kitchen store in CT, or a SAT tutoring Center in NYC, the ability to reach local customers directly, at the exact point that they are searching for these queries in Google.
When it comes to local SEO there are a few musts, the first of these is Google local, Yahoo local, Bing local… that is simple, you input your local information, address, keywords… and when someone local searches for those keywords you will come up. Another big part of local SEO consists of local directories. There are many directories/classifieds that cater to a local audience (think Yellow pages or Craigslist) and all of these directories combined can do wonders to get you tons of targeted traffic, but as with other directories, it is a good idea to employ a top SEO firm for your local directory needs.

Getting the Biggest Bang for Your Buck – A Beginners Guide to SEO

1

Starting a website for the first time is hard, and takes much work and dedication: you have to design the website (or configure an existing template), write all of the text for the website, find appropriate images, configure the domain name and the server etc… but all of these things pail in comparison to the work that you must do (related to SEO) after the site is up. One way of looking at this is that old iceberg analogy, where 20% of the iceberg is above water, and visible, and 80% is below water and unseen – in this case the visible 20% applies to getting the site up and running and the unseen 80% applies to the optimization of the site.

When it comes to getting the best bang for your SEO buck (here I am assuming that you are doing the SEO on your own, and “buck” refers to your time) the most important things that you need to do is to optimize your Meta titles, Meta descriptions, keywords etc… It is vitally important that you pick Meta keywords that you will be able to rank for b/c such keywords will determine much of the success or failure of your SEO campaign. Following the optimization of all of the “Meta stuff” I would recommend that you focus your time on other best SEO practices that Google recommends: using proper titles etc… Throughout this blog I discuss various techniques that you should employ as part of your SEO strategy, by following these tips, as well as other tips that will be discussed in future posts you will get the best results for your efforts; but as always, if you are unwilling, or unable to invest your time with this, I would recommend that you work with a top SEO company in order to ensure top notch results.
