SEO for Local Businesses
5For any local business, developing an online presence may be challenging, but it’s worth it. Web marketing is the new way to reach new customers. There are millions of websites and businesses on the Internet competing for business. From a local standpoint, search engine optimization (SEO) is crucial.
SEO is a process of improving your website’s visibility in search engines, social networking sites and more. Through on page and off page SEO techniques, you can increase the amount of organic traffic to your website. Ranking in search engines for your local geographical areas is also important.
To appear in search results for different areas, specific targeting and local SEO needs to be implemented into your efforts; if you don’t intentionally target a county or specific town in your website copy or through other off-page SEO techniques, your business or website will not be found through search engines.
If your business ranks in your town and only your town, it’s most likely that you aren’t using any local SEO and neighboring towns won’t be able to find your business. You probably rank in your town because of minor mentions on your website. For example, Premiere Creative is located in Millburn, NJ and the address is written on the website in numerous places. If a customer was searching for, strategic marketing firm in Millburn NJ, the website would appear; the website would be far less likely to appear if someone were to search for SEO firm in NJ.
To appear for surrounding areas and counties, SEO must be implemented. Focusing on specific towns and counties requires on-page and off-page local SEO targeting. Google does build associations between towns and counties, but without any mentions or targeting for your business, they won’t make the connection.
It’s important for local businesses to use SEO. Although your local business website may appear in searches for towns that you conduct business in, it’s most likely due to the fact of an address mentioned on the website. Content is also important and keywords should be rich and business focused, strategically placed throughout webpages.
There Is Evil in the World (Editorial on Norwegian Terrorist Attack)
1First of all I would like to say that this post is not about SEO, but rather it is an editorial about the state of the world and about recent events that took place in Norway. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the families that were touched by this and we mourn the loss of innocent lives.
The recent terrorist attack in Norway has demonstrated once again that evil still exists in the world. Despite everything that humanity has gone through in the 20th century, countless wars, artificial famines, genocides, pointless revolutions that have done nothing to improve the lives of the people but rather were only fought to bring wealth to the elite and many other horrific events… human beings continuously demonstrate that we are the greatest threat to ourselves.
Today the biggest threat to our long term survival does not come from war, but rather from natural events (which though likely started by man have now grown beyond our control) things such as global climate change, the depletion of resources… These are things that should be bringing humanity closer together b/c only by working together can we overcome global problems. Additionally, advances in communication technology now make it possible for great leaps to occur much faster and advances like cloud sourcing make it possible for people to cooperate together on complex projects, sharing their intellectual power as well as computing power over the internet to achieve a singular goal. Unfortunately the internet also enables individuals with extreme views to communicate more freely and makes it simple for anyone with an extreme agenda to spread their message and get followers.
Luckily, most of us are unlikely to ever come into contact with true evil b/c it is rare and though we should always remain vigilant we owe it to the victims of such attacks and to those who give their lives for freedom to live our lives to the fullest. But we are likely to come into contact with lesser evils, small time crooks, con artists… and if we spend time on the internet the likelihood that we will be approached as part of a con (think of those Nigerian emails) or that we will get spyware or viruses on our computers is almost guaranteed. Just today I was reading a comment left on a blog post on this blog and was trying to decide if it was real or spam, so I clicked on the link in the comment to check and sure enough I was greeted by a clicking from my virus detection software that a virus was just detected on my computer. My point here is not that you should fear strangers on the internet (after all I am currently good friends with many people on the web who I have yet to meet in person) but that you should be wary of things that seem too good to be true, as well as of unsolicited offers, images of gruesome/famous events…
I would like to end this post by once again expressing my deepest condolences to the victims of the terrorist attack in Norway, and to assure the victims and their families that the world is mourning with you.

Is Web Design Important to Search Engines?
7When a web search is conducted through a search engine, usually Google, Bing or Yahoo, web robots crawl websites that pertain to the search terms. When they crawl through websites, there are a large number of things they are looking for, many of which pertain to your web design.
One of the first thing search engine robots are looking for is a sitemap. A sitemap is a brief outline of all the content laid out on your website. This is a quick way for the robot to find out if you website contains what it’s looking for. Sitemaps are one of the first web design steps because many times your website is built around it. When you are thinking about designing a website, have your web designer work with you on developing a relevant sitemap to which SEO keyword research can then be conducted followed by the content, both of which are important for search engines to see.
Search engines also look at the credibility of your site as well as the popularity of it. When you are in the beginning stages of designing a website, it’s not likely you will have any credibility. It takes time to build your presence, but basic web usability web design features are important. Users (and search engines) like user-friendly design and layout. Your website should be easy to navigate through and all images and content properly displayed.
Once your web designer builds the wireframes and your web design is in the works, the content should be written. SEO keywords are crucial for web design because search engines also look at these when crawling a website. Web design and SEO go hand in hand and you web designer should be very familiar with this. These are only a few things to think about when designing a website, but very important.
Combining SEO and Web Design
9Web design and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) go hand in hand. Before starting the web design process, you should be sure that your web design firm is creating your website around basic SEO practices. We’ve learned the importance of SEO in our previous posts, which helps your website’s visibility in search engines, but there are many other web design features that can implement basic SEO.
When designing a website, important web design aspects should be considered. Things like a sitemap (which include important, relevant SEO keywords), wireframes (which lay out the design and content) and technology are only a few of the development procedures when thinking about your web design and SEO.
Another important web design feature is content. Content is what makes up the majority of your website. With that said, an important SEO feature is keywords. Content and keywords go hand in hand. Although keyword research takes time and energy, once you decide on the appropriate phrases and words, content can be developed for your website based around the popular keywords.
Web design and SEO takes research. There are common web usability web design elements that are basic and common (things like horizontal navigation, an address in the masthead and footer and a brief description of the website/company in the middle of the page) and there are common SEO basics that should be implemented into your web design: title tags and alt tags on webpages and images. All these small, basic essentials should be discussed with your web design firm and should be considered when moving forward with you web design and SEO campaign, as they are connected in many ways.
